September is Hunger Action Month, and the charitable organization Feeding America with a network of 200 food banks, has kicked off a campaign to raise awareness of the issue of hunger in the U.S. Feeding America is rolling out a strategy to increase knowledge about how pervasive the problem is among Americans.
The fact is that nearly 49 million Americans are not assured of a reliable supply of adequate food, and 16 million of these are children.
Seniors are also increasingly impacted. According to AARP, “Nearly nine million people age 50 and over are at risk of hunger every day.” Central to Hunger Action Month is a promotion using the color orange, the symbolic color of hunger.
On Sept. 6, National Hunger Awareness Day, people are urged to wear orange to bring awareness to the issue. Businesses are being asked to light their buildings orange on Sept. 9. For more information, and to see what you can do please click on the link
