Vegan Fashion Week stood strong during the first week of February. The 4-day event held its own and delighted those who attended in a way that no other event could possibly do, by showcasing eco-conscious brands and paying tribute to animals with the hope ending their exploitation.
A noticeable trend for this spring is the use of Pinatex® which is material composed of pineapple fiber. What attracts designers to using Pinatex® is that it is soft to the touch, durable and water resistant, making it perfect to use for jackets, shoes and handbags, since it is sustainably sourced and easy to maintain.
A company that stood out for its use of Pinatex® was Svala, who introduced their luxury handbag line, which featured bags and purses that are handcrafted in Los Angeles with premium PVC-free fabrics such as Italian vegan leather(polyurethane fabric), Pinatex® , cork, silicone and plant-based suede. Each bag is lined with organic cotton and recycled polyester made from plastic bottles. Owning one of these beautiful handbags is sure to add a sophisticated charm to any outfit.
Founded by Helga Douglas, who was inspired by nature and her love for animals. Svala’s name comes from the Icelandic word meaning swallow which pays homage to Douglas’s mother who is from Iceland. In many cultures the bird is a symbol of love, loyalty, freedom and hope. The sustainable-driven company originally focused on lingerie, sleepwear and loungewear and shortly after adding a luxury handbag line which brings the brand full circle.
