Discovering Blue Planet Eyewear

By Jodi Truglio — April 24, 2018

Blue Planet Eyewear is an eco-friendly sunglass/reading glass line founded on the principle of wanting to do good and make the world a better place for those who are underprivileged. For every pair of glasses sold the company donates a pair of corrective glasses to someone in need through their Restore Sight Program.

I recently had the pleasure of trying two pairs of Blue Planet Eyewear sunglasses, as someone who does not enjoy wearing sunglasses since they never fit correctly and the tinting tends to give me headaches, getting me to enjoy wearing them is no easy task.

At first I felt a little apprehensive about trying something that could potentially give me a headache, but to my surprise the first pair of glasses, Beverly which has a 60’s inspired shape just says sophisticated glamour. The timeless shape is also very flattering and comfortable enough to wear all day. Beverly is my go to pair of glasses that I never leave home without and I know has me covered with its polarized lenses that are made with recycled plastic & metals which feature a maximum clarity with a Cat. 3 1.1mm and have a 100 percent UVA/UVB protection.

The second pair I tried was  Mila, also 60’s inspired has a chic Cat Eye. These fashionable polarized sunglass feature Blue Planet Eyewear’s  Eco-Process™ which means the frame is made with recycled materials and offers 100 percent UVA/UVB polarized lenses.

At first I wasn’t sure if this particular  pair of glasses would fit me comfortably since they are very thin and the frames are fairly larger in comparison to what I normally wear, but to my surprise after a while I forgot I even had them on. I was very impressed the glasses never lost shape and did a great job protecting my eyes from the sun.

Both pairs of sunglasses have become a necessary staple in my wardrobe, especially since I am currently living in Las Vegas where the sun is always shining during the day and weather is hot in the summer.

During Magic Market Week, which is a fashion convention held in Las Vegas, I had the pleasure to ask the Vice president of Blue Planet Eyewear, Matt Weinstein few questions about his company.

Can you tell me a little about yourself?

I am a father to 3 boys, husband to an incredible and amazing wife. So grateful that I get to do something I love every day with my wife and help others and the planet along the way.

What Inspired your company?

My Father created Blue Planet Eyewear. He was inspired to create an eyewear collection that was better for the environment.

How are your glasses eco-friendly and sustainable?

When a sunglass or reader frame is created, there is a lot of excess materials (plastic and or metals). These extra materials typically end up in a land fill or the ocean. We all know how that ends… Partnering with these factories Blue Planet Eyewear is able to reuse the extra materials and create brand new eco-friendly frames. We then started incorporating new materials such as Bamboo, Beech wood, Rose wood and Zebra Wood.

Can you tell me a little bit about your Restore Sight Program and any other Blue Planet Eyewear work your company is involved in?

In 2012 we decided to make Blue Planet Eyewear a brand that was not only eco-friendly but also help people in need. The mission is simple, every pair of Blue Planet Eyewear sold, we will donate a corrective pair of glasses to a person in need. Since we started we have been able to donate over 500,000+ corrective glasses in the USA and abroad via our sight giving partners (See International, Direct Relief & Feed The Children).

We also partner with a local charity called The Best Day Foundation. They take kids with Down Syndrome and Cerebral Palsy, Autism, Blindness, Cancer, spinal cord injuries and other physical and developmental challenges build confidence and self-esteem through safe, fun, adventure activities like surfing, bodyboarding & Kayaking.

Blue Planet Eyewear also donates to our local Girls inc, Boys and Girls Club, Lou Grant Children’s & Parent workshop and to our local community park and seal sanctuary.

Since founding you company, about how many people has the Restore Sight helped?

We have donated over 500,000+ pairs of corrective glasses to people in need.

What are your best sellers?

Aviators do really well for us in particular our Amador Collection. Readers also do incredible well like our Lucia and Ojai Collections.

What are some things that separate or make your glasses stand out compared to others on the market?

My wife and I do a lot of research and development to make sure our eyewear is on trend and unique to the market. By incorporating eco-friendly materials and Bamboo or Wood, we provide eyewear that is different, trending and functional.

What style of glasses do you never leave home without?

Amador, Teller and Romi are always in my car at all times, however I go through different phases and typically pick out 1 or 2 new ones every month.

How have you evolved since starting your company?

Every year teaches me many new lessons and my growth has been incredible. Since starting with Blue Planet I have become a husband and a father, which is my favorite adventure!

Do you have a favorite quote or saying?

“A ship is safe in harbor, buy that’s not what ships are for”

What does the future hold?

So far, we are having an incredible 2018 and we are working hard to keep up that momentum. My Wife and I have been working on some amazing new concepts and ideas for 2019 and beyond, you are going to have to keep on checking in with us to find out more.
