Interview with Julianna Carella, CEO And Founder of Treatibles

By Jodi Truglio — October 30, 2017

I have a confession, I’m one of those pet owners that will do anything for my k9 companion. Let me start from the beginning, I adopted Sydney, my rescue back in April, she was 8-months-old at the time. The first night with her I discovered that my poor fur baby had horrible nightmares that were so severe she would historically cry and scream in her sleep. Sydney also had separation anxiety.

Not sure what to do, I figured I would wait about two weeks and try to make her feel as comfortable as possible, since she was still adjusting to her new home.

As Sydney became more comfortable with me, unfortunately the nightmares didn’t go away. As a result, I did what any concerned pet owner would do, I asked my veterinarian. He put her on anxiety medication, which worked for the separation anxiety, but Sydney was still suffering from her nightmares.

I was so grateful and skeptical when I discovered Treatibles at the pet convention Super Zoo.

According to their website Treatibles, uses Phytocannabinoids which are effective in bringing balance to pets suffering from conditions such as anxiety, separation anxiety, arthritis, inflammation and pain.

I was concerned because Sydney also has horrible food allergies, so I was really happy to find out that the company makes a gluten-free version of their pumpkin treat.

From personal experience Treatibles is a lifesaver that made a world of difference. My biggest fear was that using a treat with Phytocannabinoids would change Sydney’s personality, but it just relaxed her, making it possible for her beautiful, loving personality to emerge.

Recently, Julianne Carella, CEO And Founder of Treatibles was kind enough to answer a few questions for Global Looking Glass.

Can you please tell me a little bit Treatibles?

Treatibles is an industry leader in hemp-derived phytocannabinoid rich (PCR) chews, oils, and gel caps for pets. Established in 2013, we were the first company to create  PCR oil infused products  for pets. Proud to be part of the larger health freedom movement, Treatibles embraces the values of compassionate care, quality ingredients, safe access, and third party lab testing. Our mission is to provide harmony to the whole family through the happiness and health of each pet. We seek to provide calm,  balance and vitality for beloved animal companions, large and small.

What inspired the company?

More and more people were experiencing the benefits of the cannabinoids in cannabis for a variety of ailments. Because their pets were experiencing many of the same issues, such as arthritis, anxiety, digestive distress and others, too many people decided to ‘share’ their prescription with their dog or cat. Unfortunately, most did not research the harmful effects THC can have on pets – everything from static ataxia to toxicity, which can lead to death if not treated promptly. That is when I decided there needed to be a safe alternative to cannabis-derived cannabidiol (CBD) for pets. With years of research and experience behind me, I chose to create a hard chew for dogs, sourcing CBD from medicinal grade hemp. Both hemp and marijuana are part of the cannabis genus, both contain phytocannabinoids, however hemp is virtually free from the psychoactive THC (less than .3%). Hemp derived non-psychoactive phytocannabinoids, including CBD, several other cannabinoids, terpenes and more provides the same benefits as medical marijuana, minus the risks associated with THC.

What are some misconceptions about using hemp in pet products?

The question we get asked most is if hemp with get one’s pet high. The answer is no, hemp contains virtually no THC, the psychoactive cannabinoid (less than .3%).

What are some of the benefits of giving your pets Phytocannabinoid oil?

All animals have an endocannabinoid system that assists in maintaining the physiological, neurological and immunological systems of the body. If there is a deficiency of endocannabinoid production, the system’s multiple receptors will utilize the addition of phytocannabinoids to help create calm and  balance and provide support for relaxing, repairing or restoring. Naturally occurring phytocannabinoids are important for the overall health of dogs, cats,  humans, rabbits and all animals.

Phytocannabinoids may help pets suffering from a myriad of conditions including anxiety, mobility issues, seizures, general pain, loss of appetite, and more.

Dogs are especially responsive to phytocannabinoids as they have the highest concentration of  cannabinoid receptors in their brains and bodies compared to other animals, including humans.

Do you feel there is a misunderstanding or not enough education when it comes to using and or Phytocannabinoid oil in conjunction with veterinary medicine?

We are encouraged by the growing number of consumers doing their homework and learning about the benefits of phytocannabinoids for their pets. Media has been key in helping to dispel myths and provide scientific data. Although by law veterinarians are not allowed to prescribe CBD, more and more are encouraging their clients to incorporate phytocannabinoids into their pet’s treatment.

With many states legalizing marijuana, how has this impact the growth of your company ?

The phytocannabinoids in our products are derived from medical grade hemp grown here in the USA. Our products are legal to sell in and ship to all 50 states.

What are some of the biggest stigmas about using Phytocannabinoid oil ?

There is still some confusion about the difference in sourcing phytocannabinoids from hemp or from marijuana. This leads to the misconception that one’s pet will get high using hemp-based products. They will not. Most old stigmas are rapidly disappearing.

How did your collaboration with Villalobos Rescue Center come about ?

Mariah Harmony from Villalobos (the rescue featured on the hit TV show about rehabbing Pit Bulls and humans) wrote to me to share the story about how Treatibles has helped Tater Tot, her beloved Pit Bull rescue. She said that although Tater was doing okay, living  a happy, exciting, fulfilling life, managing his pain had been a continual challenge. His weekly acupuncture treatments for spinal issues helped to a certain degree, however he was still dealing with obvious physical pain and exhibiting some obsessive behaviors. She said that Tater just couldn’t seem to find peace. That is when she discovered Treatibles. Our chews had an almost immediate effect on his physical and mental health. Mariah explained that physically, Tater was finally able enjoy his workday with much less pain. And his obsessive behavior subsided tremendously. Now he even sleeps peacefully through the night. This story inspired me to do something to help. I talked with Mariah about creating a chew in Tater’s honor – one that could benefit the dogs of the rescue. Thus Tater’s Sweet Potato Tots by Treatibles was born. With veterinary bills topping $500K per year at the Rescue, it was determined that $1 of every package sold will go directly toward veterinary care for the rescues housed at Villalobos.

What has been the most challenging aspects of owning your own company ?

Keeping up with growth is challenging; we try to manage the growth strategically and then of course there are always new surprises and challenges that present themselves many times a day.

What are some of your best sellers?

The pumpkin hard chews and the 90 mg dropper bottles are the best sellers at the moment.

What has been your most memorable moment owning Treatibles ?

Early on we heard from a pet guardian that was told to put her senior dog down due to his pain level from a previous injury that left him almost completely immobile. After using Treatibles, he began to heal and even started running again.  When I spoke with this customer it was one of the first testimonials for the product that came in. It was my birthday when I got the call, and I remember crying as I listened to the story of an incredible recovery after this dog had been injured and could not walk well at all before Treatibles. When we found out that the dog had lived yet another year after being told by the vet that euthanasia was the only route, I told her that this was the best birthday gift I could have ever received.

What’s in store for the future?

More expansion, more products, and more growth!
